Hammer toes and claw toes

Crooked toes can press against the top or front of a shoe. Sufficient toe room and a good heel fit are therefore extra important.

What are hammer toes and claw toes?

With hammer toes and claw toes, one or more toes are crooked. The terms are often used interchangeably, but the position of the toe joints differs. Due to the deviating position, toe knuckles or toe tips can press against the shoe. This can cause painful pressure points, calluses or corns. A healthcare provider can assess exactly what deviation is present.

More room without sliding

A shoe with sufficient height at the toes can prevent the top from pressing against the toe knuckles. The shape of the toe box and the placement of seams also matter. Choosing a longer shoe alone can cause the foot to slide and actually shift the pressure. That is why at Hafkamp we look at the overall fit, including the closure and heel.

What do we do during a free appointment?

We discuss which shoes are difficult to wear and look at your foot shape with the 3D foot scan. After that, you can try models that offer more suitable toe room. Bring any personal orthotics, toe devices and the advice of your therapist. An extra insole takes up space, so we always check the combination in the shoe. You do not need to buy anything to receive advice.

When is medical foot care needed?

Have painful, increasing or stiff toe deviations assessed by a suitable healthcare provider. This also applies to wounds or reduced sensation. With diabetes, it is important not to treat pressure points and wounds yourself. Our shoes and FootBalance insoles do not straighten crooked toes on their own. We help with fit and walking comfort and align with the medical care you receive wherever possible.

Frequently asked questions

Can shoes straighten a hammer toe?

We do not make that promise. A suitable shoe can offer more room and limit pressure from the shoe. Research and treatment of the toe position belong to a healthcare provider.

What should I bring to the appointment?

Is the foot scan really free?

Yes. The 3D foot scan and personal shoe advice are free and without purchase obligation. You do not need to buy orthotics or shoes.

How much do the orthotics cost?

A pair of FootBalance orthotics costs €109.99, including fitting. The insoles are shaped to your feet in the store and are ready immediately.

How does the 4-week trial work?

You pay at purchase. Not satisfied with the insoles? Return them to the store within 4 weeks (28 days) after purchase and you will receive a refund.
