Hallux valgus and pressure on the big toe

A crooked big toe or sensitive bump can make it difficult to find nice shoes. At Hafkamp, we mainly look at space, material and fit.

What is hallux valgus?

With hallux valgus, the big toe points towards the other toes. A bump can develop on the inside. This can press against the shoe, but not everyone with a crooked big toe has pain. The degree of crookedness therefore does not exactly indicate how much trouble someone has. Other toes may also have less space.

What do we look for in shoes?

The space around the big toe is important. We look at the width of the forefoot, the shape of the toe box and areas where seams or firm material can cause pressure. A softer upper can feel more comfortable. The heel height and how the shoe bends also play a role. In the store, you can compare different models and feel which fit suits you.

Can support insoles straighten hallux valgus?

No. We do not promise that a shoe or FootBalance insole will straighten the big toe. Sometimes additional support can make walking more comfortable, depending on other complaints and the shoe. We discuss this during the free foot scan and fitting. If you already have insoles or treatment advice, bring them with you. This prevents another insole from making the shoe too tight.

When to see your GP?

Seek medical advice if the pain increases quickly, your other toes also start to hurt or the big toe becomes stiff. This also applies if you want to know which treatment is appropriate. Hafkamp helps with shoe and insole choice; the cause and medical treatment should be assessed by a healthcare professional. The free appointment is without purchase obligation.

Answers to your questions

Frequently asked questions

Does a wider shoe always help?

More width can provide space, but a good heel fit, toe box shape and the placement of seams are also important. That is why trying shoes on is better than just choosing a width.

Can I try on shoes without booking a foot scan?

You are welcome in the store. With a free appointment, we reserve time for personal advice and the scan if you want one.

Is the foot scan really free?

Yes. The 3D foot scan and personal shoe advice are free and without purchase obligation. You do not have to buy support insoles or shoes.

How much do the support insoles cost?

A pair of FootBalance support insoles costs €109.99, including fitting. The insoles are shaped to your feet in the store and are ready immediately.

How does the 4-week trial work?

You pay at the time of purchase. Not happy with the insoles? Return them to the store within 4 weeks (28 days) after purchase and you will receive a refund.
