What is forefoot pain or metatarsalgia?

Forefoot pain is pain in the area under the ball of the foot, just behind the toes. The medical collective term is metatarsalgia. It describes the location of the pain, not a single fixed cause. You may experience pressure, a burning sensation or sensitivity when walking. Calluses or a joint problem may also play a role.

Too narrow and too roomy can both be uncomfortable

In a narrow shoe, the toes are squeezed together. In a shoe that is too roomy, the foot may slide around. That is why we look not only at the length, but also at the width, toe room and how the shoe fits. A thick sock or extra insole changes the available space. Bring your everyday shoes so we can try on the entire combination.

Shoe and insole advice in Almere

At Hafkamp, we discuss what you feel and which activities make the forefoot sensitive. With the 3D foot scan, we look at the shape of your foot as an aid for fitting. We compare shoe models and may discuss FootBalance insoles. A suitable insole can provide extra support, but the result varies from person to person. The free appointment lasts 30 minutes. You do not need to buy insoles or shoes.

Forefoot pain that persists or changes

For persistent, increasing or unexplained pain, it is wise to have an examination by your GP or a suitable foot care professional. Burning pain that radiates to the toes may require a different approach than pressure from a shoe. If you already have a diagnosis or treatment advice, please bring it with you. We support you in choosing shoes and do not take over the treatment.
