5 steps to the right children's shoe – from first steps to teenage years šŸ‘Ÿ

Children's feet grow incredibly fast — and especially during this growth period, it's crucial for shoes to fit well and provide proper support. Incorrect footwear can not only affect walking comfort but also foot development.
At Hafkamp Modeschoenen, we are happy to help parents find the perfect children's shoe, from their first steps to their teenage years.

šŸ‘£ Step 1: Start with the right size

Children's feet are constantly changing. Did you know they can grow one to two sizes per year at first?
Therefore, regularly check the size: feel if there's enough room at the toes (about a thumb's width) and ensure the heel area fits snugly.
Unsure about the size? In our stores in Almere and Zeewolde, we measure children's feet for free — including width measurement, as that also makes a big difference.

🧦 Step 2: Pay attention to the fit and foot type

Not every child has the same foot. Narrow, wide, high instep – it all matters when choosing the right shoe.
A good children's shoe offers:

  • Ample toe room, so the toes can move freely.

  • Firm heel support, for stability.

  • Flexible sole, so the foot can roll properly.

Brands like Shoesme are known for their excellent fit and soft soles – perfect for first steps. For older children, brands like Timberland and Develab are ideal: tough, sturdy, and comfortable for everyday use.

šŸ‘Ÿ Step 3: Choose the right closure system

For the youngest children, velcro closures are often convenient: easy to put on and take off, and they can be adjusted well to the foot.
From elementary school age, lace-up shoes are a better choice because they offer more stability. And of course, we also have sneakers with zippers, which combine the best of both worlds — easy and sturdy.

šŸ” Step 4: Replace in time

A children's shoe that is too small can be recognized by wear on the toe or if the child can no longer put the shoe on properly by themselves.
On average, you can assume:

  • Toddlers (1–3 years): a new shoe every 3–4 months.

  • Preschoolers (4–6 years): every 4–6 months.

  • Schoolchildren and teenagers: every 6–12 months.

Also, check the sole: is it unevenly worn? Then it's time for a new pair.

šŸ’¬ Step 5: Ask for expert advice

Every foot is different — and that's why personal advice is so important. In our stores, we take the time to choose the best shoe together with you and your child.
Our specialists pay attention to fit, growing room, and walking comfort. This way, you can be sure that your child will walk happily and without discomfort.
